Suites Avenue Art Collection
Suites Avenue exhibits part of Derby Hotels Collection’s art collection in its Exhibition Room, consisting of pieces of Hindu and Buddhist art from the 16th-19th centuries. Particularly outstanding are two large carved wooden doors inlaid with bronze from the 16th-17th centuries which belonged to two palaces in southern India. Two of the pieces are currently on loan to Barcelona’s Museum of World Cultures.
The building, designed by Toyo Ito, stands out for its façade of undulating steel, an allegorical reinterpretation of the La Pedrera building located directly opposite, and whose architect, Antoni Gaudí, was one of the sources of inspiration for Toyo Ito, who is a big admirer. The curved lines were inspired by the shapes of nature, similar to Gaudí’s designs, and its pearlescent colour captures the different shades of sunlight and changes depending on the time of day.
